The Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad — commonly abbreviated BdMO — is a nationwide series of mathematics competitions, festivals, and training events for school and college students (up to Class XII). Launched in April 2001 under the stewardship of the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee (BdMOC), the program brings together problem solving, mathematical outreach, and national team selection in a festival-like calendar. It is operating for:
BdMO operates as both a competition and a nationwide festival. Each cycle typically begins with a preliminary/selection round (often held online), proceeds through regional rounds, and culminates in the National Olympiad and the National Math Camp. The National Camp is an intensive training environment where the national IMO team is selected and prepared.
The BdMO movement places emphasis on building mathematical culture — encouraging local math clubs, parallel math schools, and community workshops. Festival activities include puzzle hunts, lectures, outreach sessions, and friendly team contests that run alongside the formal olympiad papers.
Beginning in modest scale in April 2001, BdMO expanded steadily, aided by media and corporate support. Its systematic structure and outreach helped Bangladesh start taking part in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) from 2005. Over the years BdMO has nurtured top performers and increased participation across districts.
BdMO has become an important milestone for mathematically talented students in Bangladesh. Top performers from national selection go on to represent the country in international contests; many alumni pursue careers in research, data science, education, and engineering.
The usual flow:
Key challenges include bridging urban–rural access gaps, maintaining consistent funding for camps and logistics, and ensuring fair, robust online selection systems. The prospects, however, include widening outreach to underserved areas, strengthening international collaborations, and deeper digital integration (virtual camps, webinars, interactive content).
BdMO partners with schools and local organizations to host regional events, provide mentoring, and run parallel math schools. These collaborative networks are crucial for scaling outreach and sustaining the coach-trainee pipeline.
The Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad continues to embody the principle that mathematics is a communal, creative discipline — BdMO’s festivals and training programs foster problem solvers, mentors, and innovators who contribute to the country’s scientific culture and global representation.
