Dmitri Mendeleev
Creator of the Periodic Table
Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834–1907) revolutionized chemistry by formulating the Periodic Table of
Elements. His system not only organized known elements but predicted the discovery of new ones
with
remarkable accuracy.
Contributions
- Periodic Law — Stated that chemical properties of elements are periodic functions of atomic
weight (later
atomic number).
- Predictions — Correctly predicted properties of undiscovered elements such as gallium
(eka-aluminum) and
germanium (eka-silicon).
- Solutions and Mixtures — Studied phase transitions and critical temperature.
Legacy
Mendeleev’s periodic law became the unifying framework of chemistry, guiding research and discovery. His
vision
combined empirical order with predictive power, a hallmark of great science.
Facts
- Born in Tobolsk, Siberia.
- Published the periodic table in 1869.
- Predicted missing elements.
- Honored by element 101, Mendelevium.
